A Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for operating equipment to perform excavation, trenching, utility installation, and other earthmoving activities on a civil construction site. The Operator should have experience working around underground utilities and other equipment, understands safe operating practices, and takes pride in maintaining equipment and producing quality work.

Responsibilities

  • Safely operate heavy machinery on civil construction projects
  • Perform excavation, trenching, grading, backfilling, and material handling with the use of machines
  • Work closely with crews and foremen to complete projects safely, efficiently, and according to plan
  • Perform daily pre-operation and post-operation inspections, including fueling, greasing, and checking fluid levels
  • Report equipment maintenance needs or mechanical issues promptly
  • Keep equipment clean and perform routine prevenative maintenance
  • Follow all OSHA regulations, company safety policy, and job site procedures
  • Assist with general labor and other construction tasks as needed

Requirements

  • 2+ years of experience operating excavators, dozers, or other similar heavy equipment in a civil construction environment
  • Experience working around underground utilities, including sewer, storm drain, and water systems
  • Ability to safely maneuver machines in varying soil conditions
  • Knowledge of trench safety, earthmoving techniques, and construction safety practices
  • Ability to perform routine equipment inspections and prevenative maintenance
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
  • Capacity to work Monday through Friday regularly, and Saturday as-needed
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, work outdoors in varying weather conditions, and remain seated for extended periods

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience operating excavators, dozer, skid steers, or compactors
  • Experience reading grade stakes, utility plans, or laser elevations
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification
